the 1954 is actually refering to his guitars year
NHfiddle
nah eric johnson is far better guitar player i dont even want to know what scales are malmsteen using but his songs are way a monotonous kind of positions or excersises he had just memorized if your a guitar player you would understand
franktheduke1
chromatic exercises? err no. He primarily uses phrygian dominant, dimished, harmonic minor, melodic minor and minor pentatonic, as well well making extensive use of argpeggios, usually across 3 strings, but increasingly across all 6. Eric johnson primarily uses minor, sometimes major pentatonic with a sprinkling of various modes where they are suited. Neither player does anything remarkable with string skipping or stretches. Both players are gr8. Dont confuse personal taste with objective fact.
rockmetalmachine
do you know that the things that malmsteen plays are just short chromatic excersises and johnson make some good stretchs because of his kind of playing and his way of making the music skipping strings etc
nomis101uk
underrated most definitely, but I'm not sure about unknown. Guitar Hero ruined Cliffs of Dover for the rest of time.

Not to tear anything away from the argument, but can someone PLEASE translate the oriental subtitles? I got the 1954 and that's it. I think it applies to his age...August 17th l954. Me and him are the same age and I, by no means, can play anything like that.
EddieVanAidan
EJ is probably one of the most underrated guitarist ever. He's so good, and yet so many haven't heard of him. He makes the Jonass Sisters look like they acquired their skills watching someone play Guitar Hero.
theaceofclubs
i guess english isnt your first language? if it was you'd know how i got that from your post. if you say someone doesnt play with sould, that is not the same as saying you dont feel anything from his playing.
NHfiddle
wtf do you think I meant timmy, if I say I don't think someone has much soul? Of course I'm NOT talking about your or anyone else's perception of his music, or what EJ feels when he's playing. How would I know that? Don't be daft.
hopelesslyderanged
EJ is easily my favourite guitarists ever, and this is one of my favourite songs of his. Makes ya wanna go somehwere... lawl.

Rockin with Dokken!
utoobia
no you didnt. you can only guage how somebody makes you feel. you have no right to say how much or little "soul" someone plays with. you arent them, so you dont know. if you not feeling anything from his playing means he plays with no soul, then i guess by that logic me feeling something proves he does. do you see how that makes no sense and why you cant guage "soul"?
DawwgMayne
Actually, I just did "guage" soul and I can do it again. So can you. Also, I can apparently express my opinion more politely than you can. Sheesh.
happyjoe4ever
you could have just said he's not your cup of tea and left it at that. saying he doesnt have much soul makes you sound like an idiot. you cant guage "soul".

Instrumentals rule!
timmy47
It's an instrumental. The guitar is playing both its part, as well as the vocal line. Music is art, and there are no rules that say you have to have vocals on EVERY song. True, Eric isn't a smiler, but that's because he is so into the moment, and what he's playing. He's a player's player. He's not up there hamming it up for the crowd with a big dopey grin on his face. If you want that, go watch EVH. Another awesome guitarist, with a different style. Go EJ, Tommy, and Kyle! I love you guys.
utoobia
Its okay man, its his opinion. He has the right to express them. But, I agree, choosing a musician over another is not very "humble"
timmy47
ok?
metallic773
Music is not a competition.
create42000
He is an unbelievable technical player, but his stuff is rather cold and hasn't much soul. Not my cup of tea. No offense to you fans.

Well, shit, we can't all be David Lee Roth, can we?
